This weekend my wife, son, mother in law and I were in a car accident. Some guy really wanted to be in my lane much more that I apparently. So, after he got his tickets (plural) I called my insurance to report the accident. Get this, he has no insurance. So that is fun.

I got the car towed today and went to get my rental car and they gave me a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. It has android auto! “Sport” mode! 4 wheels! An engine! It is dark red!

Aside from looking like I am from Florida due to the tag, I am alright with it. I mean, I could have gotten stuck with that loathesome Chevy Spark. At 6'6" tall, that would be awesome.

You’d think people without insurance would be extra vigilant when driving, but nope. Although anyone who doesn’t have insurance normally just makes bad life decisions in general.

Yeah, we know damn well he isn't going to pay those tickets either. I don't understand why a car isn't immediately impounded on the spot if someone doesn't have insurance.

no but the other guy is, he doesn’t have insurance and somehow hit his head on the steering wheel really hard, 4 or 5 times.

No insurance is illegal here. If he has no insurance, what happens...? Does he still have to pay somehow, or?

Yeah no insurance is illegal here as well. My wife’s intuition told her that perhaps the car is not his and it does have insurance, but perhaps he “borrowed it without asking the person”. Not necessarily “stole”. He was super apologetic when it happened but as soon as he got the tickets, he started to say that I hit him.

No insurance is generally only a ticket and fine in my state. I’m not sure how liability works out.

He was a mid to late 50s balding white guy. Really sheepish at first but after getting his tickets he immediately lashed out and started acting like a petulant child who did not get his way.

Almost all insurance policies include uninsured motorist coverage. Meaning that your insurance will pay as if the person had insurance. If your damages exceed the coverage of your uninsured policy then you can go after the person for their money/stuff but they probably don’t have much if they don’t have basic insurance.

Before they pay, the insurance company will probably need to ensure that the car isn’t covered in some other way. Usually after your insurance pays, they go after the person for the money they paid, but if a person doesn’t have insurance they probably don’t have much worth suing for.

To everyone else, this is a great time to go see what your underinsured and uninsured coverage is like. This is protection for you/your family; and it’s usually not expensive.
